NATO fighter jets were scrambled over Estonia following a Russian drone incursion, with the Alliance reacting 'swiftly and exactly as planned'
Fighter jets were scrambled over NATO state Estonia today amid a drone incursion as Ukraine staged a massive attack on a key Russian oil port in the Baltic Sea.
A drone threat was also issued in neighbouring state Latvia along its border with Russia.
Air alerts were activated in parts of Estonia after "drones flew close to the border and entered Estonian airspace" overnight, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said on X on Tuesday morning.
He added: "NATO reacted swiftly and exactly as planned. The Alliance is vigilant and ready to protect Allied territory.
"Incidents like this are a direct consequence of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and underline the need to increase pressure on Russia to end its aggression."
Colonel Uku Arold, spokesperson for the Estonian Defence Forces, said: "There have been drones moving parallel to the eastern borders of both Estonia and Latvia. They entered Estonia which is why we activated the alarm."
Eight counties in Estonia were hit by the drone scare - and NATO duty fighters from the Turkish air force were scrambled.
An update on the Estonian government's crisis communication website confirmed that the drone threat warning ended at 5.30am.
Alexander Drozdenko, governor of Leningrad Oblast in north-west Russia, said 38 drones had been destroyed over the region, which borders Estonia, early on Tuesday, and confirmed damage to the Port of Ust-Luga.
