From a five-year-old weather enthusiast to a beloved animated sheep – the inspiration for the list of storm names for this autumn and winter is wide and varied.

Austen, Boelo and Chloe will be the first named storms of this winter, meteorologists have revealed, after more than 40,000 suggestions were submitted by the public.

The Mettur dam is traditionally opened on June 12 every year to facilitate the cultivation of kuruvai, a short-duration paddy crop, in the Cauvery Delta region. The opening was delayed this year as the Cauvery basin received inadequate rainfall and water levels in the reservoir remained low. Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Tuesday opened the sluice gates of the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur, releasing Cauvery water for irrigation in the delta districts.
