The shock announcement came during the afternoon session on the fourth day of the series decider at Trent Bridge, with Stokes bowling when the news broke. His decision came after he was left out of the second Test against New Zealand following an investigation into an incident at a London nightclub. He returned for the third Test, during which he made the decision to step down.
