Millions of homes and businesses across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic face an increased threat of power outages on Wednesday as intense heat places severe strain on electricity networks.
The U.S. Department of Energy raised concerns regarding potential blackouts within the PJM Interconnection, the country's largest grid network, which supplies 67 million residents between Chicago and Washington D.C.
DOE Secretary Chris Wright granted emergency authorization late Tuesday for PJM to engage backup power supplies. The measure serves as a final safeguard before issuing a level 3 energy emergency alert, which typically precedes rotating power cuts.
According to the DOE, the intervention is intended "to stabilize the Mid-Atlantic grid and mitigate the risk of blackouts."
"Maintaining affordable, reliable, and secure power for hardworking American families and businesses during periods of hot weather is non-negotiable," Wright said in a statement.
Forecasts indicate temperatures will surpass 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) in major urban centers including St. Louis, Chicago, and Washington D.C. during peak energy hours.
Under a "maximum generation emergency" alert issued early Wednesday, PJM directed power plants currently undergoing scheduled maintenance to clarify how quickly they can resume operations.
Further west and south, the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)—which manages power for 15 states—projected demand could reach nearly 121 gigawatts, nearing its all-time record of 127.1 GW.
MISO highlighted tight operational margins and expanded its reserve capacity to counter unpredicted generator failures and line congestion.
Local distributors have also urged conservation; in rural Missouri's Ozark region, the Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative called on consumers to unplug inactive electronics and adjust thermostats upward to ease air conditioning demand.
