Just seconds later, a loud bang could be heard as Khan's vehicle collided with Mr Jeffree's yellow Reliant Scimitar GTE. A separate piece of doorbell footage then captures the moment his Golf smashed into another car in a front garden. Mr Jeffree suffered three fractured vertebrae, cracked ribs, and a cracked sternum, while his classic car that he had owned for more than 40 years was "completely destroyed." "If I had anyone in my car, if my wife had been in the passenger seat and they had hit me in the middle of the car, we both could have been killed," he said. A court heard Khan, who had three friends in his car, was speeding at about 60mph on a 30mph residential road. He overtook another car at speed before he "shot across the junction without any hesitation" and crashed into Mr Jeffree's car. Khan, who is now 18, was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on Friday last week after he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. A sentence of 19 months at a Young Offenders' Institution (YOI) was suspended for three years. He was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and 15 days of rehabilitation activities. Khan was also given a three-year driving ban and must pass an extended retest before he can drive again. Prosecutor Nadine Mathurasangh told an earlier court hearing: “At around 2pm in the afternoon the defendant was driving a red Volkswagen vehicle on Stratford Way. “He was seen to be driving at excessive speed. This was a 30mph zone and we’ve got a witness who says the approximate speed driven by the defendant was 60 to 70mph.” As Khan approached the junction with Cassiobury Drive he performed a dangerous overtake of a red Mazda on the offside, the court heard. The lady driving the Mazda said Khan’s vehicle then “shot across the junction without any hesitation” and smashed into Mr Jeffree’s car. Both vehicles were sent spinning – Khan's car ended up on somebody's front garden while Mr Jeffree’s came to a rest in the road. Defending, Amita Patel said her client was remorseful and had written a "heartfelt" letter of apology to Mr Jeffree. In the letter, Khan wrote: "Since the accident I have thought about it a lot. I genuinely wish I could change what happened."
