King Charles and Emmanuel Macron share lighthearted moment viewing Bayeux Tapestry King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte for a special preview of the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum in London King Charles displayed his witty side in an amusing exchange with Emmanuel Macron as the pair examined the Bayeux Tapestry together on Wednesday - prompting praise for his sense of humour. The duo enjoyed a private viewing of the tapestry, ahead of its public exhibition running from September 10 to July 11, 2027. Accompanied by their wives Queen Camilla and Brigitte Macron, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his wife, Marie-France van Heel also present, the King was seen glancing around for the French President, before quipping: "Ah yes, this is my favourite bit was to discover... he [William the Conqueror] brought with him an enormous cask of wine from France for all the troops. Very sensible." Charles and Camilla’s state visit to France in 2023 and returning the favour by the French president and his wife last year have been credited with helping securing the loan of the tapestry for the British Museum. Palace sources said while discussions have of course been going on for many years, the visits played a key part in building the 'bilateral bonhomie' that has made it possible. The historic 70-metre-long 11th century cloth is currently on loan from France - with the woven record of the Norman conquest returning to the UK for the first time in almost 1,000 years. The loan of the artwork has already broken records for the British Museum, with it recording the single biggest day of ticket sales in its history, generating more than £2.4million in sales in the first 24 hours. "Genuinely nice to see footage of a king of England being rather droll," one X user exclaimed in response to the clip. A second person added: "Very cool moment! Especially King Charles saying how there was wine for all the soldiers!" While a third admitted: "I knew I liked him. No wonder my ancestors followed him over!" Macron also referenced the wine in a speech. He later said: "For it [Bayeux Tapestry] is much more than just a linen canvas embroidered with wool. It represents a whole chapter of French, British and European history." He continued: "As you know, it tells the story of the feud between William and Harold - comrades in arms - before they became enemies. And the Norman army crossing the Channel, then the Battle of Hastings fought by William and his troops, which was of course proceeded by a great banquet with the wine barrels they had previously loaded on the sheeps. "The French having always had a certain sense of priorities!" King Charles also took to the stand, speaking in both English and French, praising Macron: "Let me first extend my deepest appreciation to you, and to the French people, for the trust you have placed in the United Kingdom by agreeing to this unprecedented loan. "I well remember our discussing this possibility during our State Visit to France in 2023; it is a particular joy therefore, to see the hope become reality. "Indeed, it is thanks to the certainty you have always had - and which I very much share - that we are here this evening in order that the Tapestry should be seen, in London, for the benefit of the peoples of both our countries, the best possible symbol of that 'Entente amicale', of which we have both spoken so fondly."
