Barnsley fire live as emergency services rush to massive scrapyard blaze Several fire crews are currently on the scene following an 'incident' in Barnsley at a scrap metal and tyres site Firefighters are currently battling a major blaze in Barnsley where locals across the region say can be seen for miles. Ten fire engines and several specialist vehicles are attending a fire on Boulder Bridge Lane in Carlton, Barnsley. The blaze is believed to be affecting a scrap metal and tyres site. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said in a statement it is working to bring the incident under control. Residents are being urged to avoid the area and keep their windows and doors closed due to a "large amount of smoke". Key Events South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue has confirmed in an update that 10 fire engines and one aerial ladder platform as well as a number of operational support vehicles are on the scene at a fire in Carlton. The fire involves "scrap metal and tyes on Boulder Bridge Lane", the fire service said. "We anticipate to be on scene throughout the night and into tomorrow morning. "Please continue to avoid the area. "Those living nearby and anyone who can smell smoke in the wider area should keep their windows and doors closed." Huge plumes of thick black smoke coming from a fire in Barnsley is reportedly spotted as far as Leeds this evening. On social media, residents across South Yorkshire said they could see the flames or the smoke from the motorway. One resident said they can smell it from Monkbretton while a second said their garden is "covered in black soot" in Cudworth. Others said it could be seen from Greasbrough and even from the A65 in Leeds. "It's definitelt a bad one, (you) can see how bad it is in Royston. You can see the flames as well as smoke", said one. In a statement earlier this evening, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "We currently have 8 fire engines and a number of specialist vehicles at an incident on Boulder Bridge Lane, Carlton, Barnsley. "Please avoid the area while crews work to bring this incident under control. Anyone living nearby should keep their doors and windows closed due to a large amount of smoke in the area."
