Millennials and Gen Z will remember how fantastic McDonald's Happy Meal toys used to be, from TY Beanie Babies to Betty Spaghetti. There were so many fantastic, on-trend collabs that seem to have disappeared.
In fact, so many people were convinced that their collection of random plastic and toys was going to be worth something one day that they desperately clung to them, keeping them in storage, waiting for the day that they were going to cash in their "millions".
Sadly, for the most part, this does not seem to be the case, as most are realising right now, but it does prove how much McDonald's toys have changed over the years.
One woman showed off a toy that she got in the early 2010s, writing over the top of it: "This is from a McDonald's Happy Meal from 2011. I kept it because I thought it would be worth millions in the future".
What is the Happy Meal toy?
The McDonald's Beyoncé "Halo" Happy Meal toy was a music player/box released around 2011 that featured an insert card of Beyoncé and played music or lit up when activated.
The toys looked like a miniature iPod dock, with the card being the iPod and the plastic dock (which contained the song and the batteries).
This one in particular plays the Dave Aude remix of Halo, which is on her Above & Beyoncé Remix EP, rather than the original, slower version everyone is probably used to.
Someone is selling it currently on eBay for £37, so not quite worth the millions she was anticipating. However, if you have one, it may be worth trying to sell it if you're not keeping it for sentimental value.
According to Kids Meal Fandom, the music players in various countries offered different song selections, with some overlap. For example, "Halo" and "I Gotta Feeling" appeared in the sets, alongside songs like "The Boy Does Nothing" by Alesha Dixon, "No Limits (No Rap)" by 2 Unlimited, "Dance With Somebody" by Mando Diao, "Pump Up the Jam" by Technotronic, "Evacuate the Dancefloor" by Cascada, "Fireflies" by Owl City, and "Jai Ho" by the Pussycat Dolls.
Reaction to the toy
Someone wrote: "Back when Happy Meal toys weren't just paper." However, at the moment, little ones can collect Crocs mini clog clip keyrings (a set of 12 collectable mini shoes in tiny shoeboxes) available until September 21.
Before that, there were Mr Men and Little Miss road trip characters, which were 10 character vehicles accompanied by a driving license, a map, and stickers.
A second fumed: "The last time I got a McDonald’s Happy Meal was in 2023, and I got a book..."
A third joked: "They're worth millions to me!"
