The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was seen circling nearby after encountering an unspecified technical issue, according to Flightradar24. Around 30 minutes into the flight, the crew transmitted squawk code 7700, the international aviation code used to signal a general emergency. According to AirLive, the aircraft initially remained at around 7,000ft while the crew worked through onboard safety checks and air traffic control coordinated priority handling. It then descended to around 6,000ft as the flight diverted towards Manchester Airport, where it was expected to use a longer runway. The aircraft, registered 9H-VUV, is operated by Malta Air.
