People in a West Yorkshire town have allegedly been chased by a man dressed as horror film character Michael Myers.
The masked figure was seen sporting the infamous mask from the slasher film series Halloween as he walked along Manor Way in Batley, near Leeds. The unusual appearance prompted strong reaction on social media after a video of the person in question was posted.
Some even claimed the man chased people, causing them to narrowly avoid running into traffic, while others questioned whether the sighting was part of a social media trend or an early Halloween celebration. Commenting on the matter in the Batley Matters Facebook group, user Ibby Husy Hussain said the man had allegedly chased a young mother and her toddler.
He added that the woman ran onto Dark Lane in panic, narrowly avoiding traffic. He wrote: "This may be funny to some [but] this idiot chased a young mother and her toddler, the outcome could’ve been a lot worse!"
Yorkshire Live reports another user, Scent Le Elegance Fmworld, explained the masked man had chased their sister. The woman also allegedly ran onto a main road without looking while fleeing the man before she was helped by someone known to her.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police told Mirror Online that a report was made of someone dressed in a Michael Myers costume acting suspiciously on Manor Way yesterday. However, no other offences were reported and there is no suggestion the masked man chased anyone.
Other residents said they would be frightened if they came across the man. Vicky Tootill wrote: "Well I would s*** myself." Alexandra Ignac said: "Oh gosh, that's not funny mate. Get help!"
Anonymous participant 895 said there was a trend on TikTok involving people dressing up as characters and trying to frighten members of the public, adding: "Don’t give him the attention he craves." User Faheem Abdullah claimed the incident had been staged after seeing another post showing the man further down the road, with someone filming from a car.
While Halloween is still almost eight weeks away, some couldn't help but wonder if the appearance was related to the holiday. David Logue asked: "Is it Halloween already?", while Stephen Maloney described the man as "a bit early".
Christine Belmonte suggested the attention had achieved what the man wanted, writing: "Seems he has everyone talking about him, so he achieved his objective."
