Prince Harry has not spoken to King Charles since bombshell return to UK with Meghan EXCLUSIVE: Royal sources have revealed how tensions remain high between the Duke of Sussex and the royal family, with the King and the Firm being kept in the dark over Harry and Meghan's motives for relocating from California Prince Harry has not spoken to the King since returning to the UK two weeks ago, royal sources have revealed. The Duke of Sussex has not scheduled a call with his father since informing him that he was moving back to Britain with his wife Meghan and their two children. The King was on a summer break at Balmoral in Scotland, when his estranged son told him he was moving back to his home country - six years after sensationally quitting his royal role in 2020. Charles and his heir Prince William were together at the monarch’s Scottish estate when Harry informed the King - just three days before news broke around the world. Royal sources have said the King and the rest of the royal family has been “blindsided” by the Sussexes' relocation and remain unsure of the true reason for the family moving from California. Despite the confusion, the King is understood to be very much looking forward to seeing his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, more often. However, sources say the monarch feels "perplexed" that his estranged son has not offered the courtesy of keeping him informed about the family's plans. One source said: "Harry has spoken openly about desperately wanting reconciliation and yet he is the one keeping his father and his family in the dark about major developments such as moving back to the UK. "Such behaviour just makes it harder to deal with the Sussexes or know their true motives for moving their entire lives back to Harry's homeland. The whole family are perplexed about the situation." Rumours have swirled in royal circles as to why Harry and Meghan have made the seemingly hasty decision to move to the UK, from Harry, 41, becoming homesick to Meghan, 45, being in line for a starring role in the Netflix series, The Gentlemen. Uncertainty has also crept in as to whether the Sussexes have made the move to be closer to the King as a precursor to asking to become part of the working royal family again. Well placed insiders were quick to shut down that idea, with the King and the Prince of Wales "completely united" that there is no way back for Harry and Meghan to return to the royal fold. In a sign of just how strained relations are between the couple and the royal family, the King this week took the extraordinary step of signing off a letter sent to “key stakeholders” around the country to make his position clear. A letter was yesterday sent on the direction of the monarch to local authorities, government departments and Lord Lieutenants - as well as the Sussexes' personal team - making clear that Harry and Meghan could not use their "HRH" titles and would not work on behalf of the Royal family. Despite the King welcoming Harry, Meghan and their children to his Highgrove home when his son was visiting in July to mark the one year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, it marked the first sign of tension between the two camps since the Sussexes’ return. Harry and Meghan were reportedly "surprised" by the correspondence, which was made public by Buckingham Palace, clarifying the couple will continue to be treated as "private citizens". The Sussexes' reportedly received the document an hour before it was sent to the media, but their office claims it was denied the chance to clarify several of the monarch's points before it was released. It was also reported today that the letter came as the Home Office committee responsible for making decisions about royal security, is expected to meet as early as today. Harry and Meghan are understood to be concerned that the timing of the King's announcement may be linked to a crucial meeting on their security arrangements. The couple are still pushing for taxpayer funded police protection - despite losing a case at the High Court and Court of Appeal last year. The Mirror revealed last week that the Home Office had ordered an emergency review of the Sussexes' risk level now that they have moved back to the UK. The Sussex camp is also reportedly concerned that the announcement's timing may be linked to this week's meeting of the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec). The letter, issued on behalf of the King and sent to more than 100 "senior stakeholders" on Monday, stated that the Sussexes should not use their HRH styles, which are still in abeyance, and that they "do not represent the sovereign" when making public appearances. The letter issued yesterday on behalf of the King sets out: "Following the decision by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to relocate to the UK, we have received a number of requests for guidance. To help avoid doubt or confusion, the King has directed that the following information be shared. "It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign, and are no longer working members of The Royal Family. "This position, distinct from the state and royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected. "It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. "The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests." A spokesman for the Duke and Duchess said: "We were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance," adding that the publication of the letter had caught the couple off guard.
