My top 10 things to watch Tuesday, Sept. 8 1. We're heading for a mixed open on Wall Street this morning. S & P futures are slightly lower, while Nasdaq futures are higher. Bond yields are well off their highs of the morning, giving stocks a little breathing room. Oil prices are higher after more fighting in the Middle East over the long holiday weekend, with Brent crude topping $99 a barrel at one point. 2. August inflation data due out this week has big implications for the Federal Reserve's next move. In the wake of Friday's strong jobs report, traders are pricing in a 60% probability of a hike at next week's meeting, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool . Also: Apple's iPhone launch event is tomorrow, and at noon ET Thursday, we'll hold our September Monthly Meeting for Investing Club subscribers. Sign up here . 3. Lots of buzz for OpenAI's new Astra model. Amazingly good from what I've seen. Ben Reitzes of Melius Research said it shows "OpenAI is so back," which should support the AI chip and hardware trade. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said on X that Astra was trained on 100,000 Grace Blackwell GPUs. "400K GPUS coming online next," he wrote. 4. Club name Intel is expected to raise prices for CPUs by another 10% this fall, Taiwan's DigiTimes reported . Improving gross margins rather than gaining market share. Shares are up almost 5% premarket. Northland Securities, a smaller shop, also upgraded Intel to buy from hold this morning, citing material progress in its turnaround. Also touted the national security importance of Intel Foundry. 5. Huge price target boosts for refiners Marathon Petroleum ($405 from $321), Phillips 66 ($300 from $235) and Valero ($450 from $355) at UBS. Analysts reiterated their buy ratings on all three names. This cohort remains among the hottest in the market thanks to elevated refining margins. Diesel crack spreads, a profitability gauge for refiners, hit an all-time high last week. 6. Citi upgraded trucker Old Dominion Freight Line and freight broker C.H. Robinson to buy from hold after a summer swoon for these stocks. That has created a more reasonable risk/reward and gives investors a chance to buy "quality at a reasonable price," analysts argued. In general, analysts said the freight cycle inflection remains on track. Good news for Club name FedEx Freight . 7. Speaking of, JPMorgan initiated coverage of FedEx Freight with a buy rating and price target of $160. JPM's thesis is similar to ours following the spin-off from FedEx Corp : FDXF can improve profitability and service quality now that it's a standalone entity. Self-help opportunity. Admittedly, the stock has been sluggish out of the gate, but these aren't overnight fixes. 8. Pivotal Research started coverage of SpaceX with a buy and price target of $220. For SpaceX to be a successful investment from here, analysts argued, the company needs to nail the development of reusable rocket Starship. As long as we keep seeing positive research pushing SpaceX, I'm not worried about the additional stock coming into the market from expiring IPO lockups . 9. Stifel upped its price target on Hinge Health to $115 from $96 after a meeting with management. Kept its buy rating. Hinge is primarily a digital platform for physical therapy, with ambitions in other areas of healthcare. Beloved stock right now among analysts and investors alike. Shares are up 47% in three months and almost double year to date. CEO Daniel Perez told a good story on "Mad Money" in May. 10. Club name Eaton was upgraded to buy from hold at UBS. Analysts said improving margins are on the horizon thanks to proactive pricing and better execution. Demand for Eaton's electrical equipment remains strong due to the AI buildout. But, as we wrote for Club members last week , its recent acquisition of liquid cooling provider Boyd Thermal makes it a more well-rounded data center supplier.
