A man became the equivalent of £859k richer after buying a EuroMillions lottery ticket, but may have missed out on his prize money if he didn't clean his phone case.
A man realised he'd won the lottery by simply looking behind his phone. Said individual, a resident of the French territory of La Reunion in the Indian Ocean, was cleaning his device when he found the ticket.
The player had originally purchased the the ticket for a EuroMillions lottery draw on July 31, but promptly forgot about it after putting the ticket behind his phone.
It was when he was cleaning his phone case in the town of Sainte-Marie, that he found the ticket, before quickly discovering he'd won €1m through the FJD app.
It later transpired that under the FDJ's rules, a winning ticket remains valid for up to 60 days, giving players a window of time to claim their winnings.
Following his victory, the player, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said in a statement that he intends to share some of the money with members of his family.
He told La Francais des Jeux: "I understand what is happening to us, but it still feels unreal. 100 percent of winners tried their luck."
However, the jaw-dropping prize is not the biggest for a victor in the French region in the Indian Ocean, as another person won €50.6m (£43.4m) in May 2022 after buying a ticket on the island on the island of Saint-Pierre.
Remarkable lottery stories aren't just found in France or French territories, they happen in other countries too, leading to some remarkable stories.
One man found his winning lottery ticket in his jacket pocket six months after his own victory.
The individual, a father from the German city of Frankfurt, spent two seasons oblivious to the fact he'd won €15.3m (£13m), in spite of a campaign by the German Lotto Hessen company to find him.
The man only found his ticket because one day, the weather had turned a bit cold and he decided to put a jacket on, at which point it appeared.
The Mirror reported that the man said: "It wasn't until the weekend that I found the ticket again, folded up in the inside pocket of my jacket.
"When I checked the numbers on my phone and saw the winning amount, I was completely shocked – luckily I was sitting down, otherwise my knees would have given way."
The unnamed German man said he and his wife intend to use the money to help their children, but will also buy themselves a new sofa for their living room too.
