Sniffer dogs alerted Swiss customs officers to a German vehicle at the Rheinfelden border crossing at around 1pm local time, Bild reports. The German Federal Police swarmed the scene with a bomb disposal team as two busy highways were closed. The suspect's vehicle was stopped as it entered Switzerland from Germany after authorities noticed that the registered owner was suspected of a crime. The Baden-Württemberg state police reported the vehicle before it was searched by explosive detection dogs. On two occasions, the dogs alerted customs officers to the vehicle, indicating the presence of explosives. The A861 in Germany and the A3 in Switzerland have been closed in both directions as a result, with disruption expected to last into the evening. The crossing connects Germany to Rheinfelden in Switzerland across the Rhine River. Around 28,000 vehicles pass through the highway every day.
