As he declared near-victory in Iran, Trump assured Americans that "food prices and almost every other item are rapidly going down" before adding that the cost of "oil will be going down as soon as we win the war with Iran, which is taking place right now." Speaking on the critical waterway, the US President continued: "We're winning it. We control the Hormuz Strait. I think we should call the Hormuz Strait the 'Trump Strait'. I should get something out of it." An apparent fan of his own idea, he then doubled down on it, telling the gathered crowds: "Ladies and gentlemen, I have an announcement: We'll call it the Trump Strait. "I'm sure the Iranian leadership will be thrilled with that," he joked, as laughter could be heard ringing out around him. Trump continued: "I’d like to tell you it was their idea. It was not their idea, don't think they're too happy about [the situation].” Although he appeared to come up with the 'Trump Strait' idea on the spot, it was not the first time the US President has floated the idea. Last Wednesday, Trump made a similar claim on his preferred platform, Truth Social. “Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” He wrote in the social media post. “Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!" Trump's designs on the Strait of Hormuz, which was initially named after the medieval Kingdom of Hormuz in the 13th century, comes days after the US President claimed a slew of nations as part of the US in a wild post that ruffled feathers nationwide. Again, on his preferred Truth Social, Trump shared an image of a map of the US - with a difference. The captionless post bore an AI-generated map with the Star-Spangled Banner draped across the 'USA'... which included Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, and thirty or so Central American and Caribbean nations as part of the United States. The controversial post was a clear reference to previous comments made by Trump on making Canada the 51st state of the US, his repeated musings about taking over Greenland, and more. Iceland — a European nation a whole 180 miles away from Greenland — was also included in Trump's 'dream map'. Trump has mistakenly named Iceland on four separate occasions while speaking about his designs on the completely different nation of Greenland. Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir summoned US Ambassador Billy Long to her office on Monday to “convey a clear message that the image was wholly inappropriate,” as per a statement. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum all issued furious statements in response to Trump's social media mapmaking attempt. And, in another social media moment, the US President looked inward to his own nation by suggesting the state of New Mexico be renamed to "New America". And prior to that, Trump issued an executive order to demand mapmakers change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, "effective immediately", as his trade war with Canada continues. Back in January 2025, the US President signed an executive order on his first day back in office to officially rename the US portion of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America".
