Seahawks QB Darnold set for MRI but 'great news' so far on hip injury

SEATTLE -- Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold was ruled out for the remainder of the team's season-opening 13-10 win against the New England Patriots after suffering a hip injury on the first drive Wednesday night. Darnold was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for a CT scan on his hip, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The initial test was encouraging but inconclusive, and Darnold is now scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday, sources said. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said the team got "great news back" on Darnold's injury and that doctors do not believe the quarterback's hip is fractured. The Seahawks' radio broadcast specified that Darnold's injury is to his right hip. Darnold landed on his right knee when he was sacked from behind by former Seahawks outside linebacker Dre'Mont Jones on third down. After he was examined in the medical tent, Darnold limped into the locker room as the Seahawks were taking the field for their second possession. Darnold was initially announced as questionable to return before being downgraded to out for the remainder of the game. Veteran backup Drew Lock completed 16 of 22 attempts for 187 yards, 1 touchdown and no interceptions in relief of Darnold in the rematch of Seattle's victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl LX. Lock, 29, entered with a 10-18 record as a starter over his first seven NFL seasons. He made five appearances last season as Darnold started every game. Jalen Milroe was designated pregame as Seattle's emergency third quarterback, meaning he was among the team's inactives but was suited up and available to play if Darnold and Lock had both gone down with injury. Last year, Darnold become the first quarterback in NFL history to win 14 regular-season games in consecutive seasons with different teams, having gone 14-3 in 2024 with the Minnesota Vikings before doing the same with Seattle while making his second straight Pro Bowl. According to ESPN Research, Darnold's 17 wins, including playoffs, were the most by a quarterback in his first season with a team.
