The 20-year-old, named as 'John' by police, from Gateshead, was reported missing on September 2 after he was last seen in Newcastle in the early hours of the morning. Northumbria Police conducted extensive enquiries to locate John, including a review of local CCTV and public appeals. Two people who were seen on CCTV speaking to John on Tower Street in Newcastle City Centre approached police to assist with their enquiries. The individuals confirmed that at around 3am on September 2, John had asked them for directions before heading towards City Road. Sadly, a body matching the description of John was pulled from the River Tyne near Newcastle Quayside shortly after 11am on Wednesday, September 9. Formal identification is yet to take place but John's next of kin have been notified. They are being supported by officers, reports Chronicle Live. Detective Inspector Nick Went, of the Force's Missing Investigation Team, said: "This is an extremely sad development, and our thoughts are with John's family and friends. "I would like to thank all of the officers involved in our investigation to locate John, along with everyone who shared our appeals and contacted us with information. It is much appreciated. "We would continue to ask that people respect the family's privacy at this tragic time. As is standard practice, a report into John's death will now be prepared for the coroner."
