Victoria Police said the 51-year-old Swan Hill man flagged down a motorist on the Murray Valley Highway at Beverford, about 17 kilometres north-west of Swan Hill, just after 11am on Wednesday. Detectives allege a 36-year-old woman had exited her car to assist the man, before "a struggle ensued" and the man stole the Holden Commodore.

Detectives allege a 36-year-old woman had exited her car to assist the man, before "a struggle ensued" and the man stole the Holden Commodore. A seven-month-old baby who had been inside the car was found by a passer-by a short distance away on the side of the highway. The baby was uninjured, but the woman sustained minor injuries during the struggle. They were both taken to hospital. The car was later found abandoned in bushland near Pire Road in Nyah, about 10km from where the alleged carjacking took place. Police arrested a man several hours later and charged him with multiple offences. They included carjacking, child stealing, behaving in a grossly offensive manner, theft of a motor vehicle, unlawful assault, committing an indictable offence whilst on bail and failing to comply with the conditions of a bail agreement. He faced the Kerang Magistrates' Court on Thursday and was remanded to appear at Mildura Magistrates court in December.
