Truck driver charged over fatal collision that left teen boy dead

Major Collision Investigation detectives have charged a 36-year-old man from Sebastian over the collision that killed Girton Grammar student Thom Hosking. The 15-year-old was on his way to school when he was allegedly struck by the truck just after 8.30am on October 10 last year. What's next? A truck driver involved in a crash in the central Victorian city of Bendigo in October last year, that killed a 15-year-old boy, has been charged by police. Fifteen-year-old Girton Grammar student Thom Hosking was crossing the Midland Highway on his way to school when he was struck and killed near the intersection of Myrtle Street about 8:35am. Today detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit charged the 36-year-old Sebastian man with dangerous driving causing death, driving in a dangerous manner, careless driving and failing to give way at a pedestrian crossing. A statement from Thom's family in the days after his death described him as the "glue of the family". "Thom's death is a tragedy in the truest form," the statement said. "He was 15. A boy entering manhood with so many of life's great moments about to open up for him." Police and witnesses previously told the ABC that a witness started CPR on Thom before multiple specialist paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene. In a letter sent to parents later that day, Girton Grammar principal Emma O'Rielly confirmed the boy was a senior student at the school and that counselling was offered to students. The truck driver was bailed to appear at the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on November 11.
