Lower Manhattan has evolved from a business district that largely emptied out after work into a hub for housing, culture and nightlife, with the population more than doubling since 9/11. The area has added almost 25,000 residential units since 9/11, and its workforce has diversified, with financial services now representing 25% of downtown's occupied space. Blomberg's Amanda L. On September 11, 2001, members of Al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger airliners. They flew two planes into the twin skyscrapers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan around 9 a.m., causing both towers to collapse within hours. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., while a fourth — likely intended for the U.S. Capitol building — crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa.
