The train was travelling between the cities of Rouen and Caen when it derailed at around 7.45pm local time (6.45pm BST) on Friday, local authorities said. A mass-casualty response plan was activated, with 140 firefighters deployed to the scene. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said on X that the number of people injured was a "provisional count". SNCF Reseau, which manages the French rail network, told the AFP news agency that services on the line had been suspended and power to the tracks cut to allow emergency services to work. "The priority is to care for the passengers and then to restore safe operating conditions," SNCF Reseau said. Rail authorities and the police are investigating the cause of the accident. A 15-year-old boy travelling in carriage 34 told French newspaper Ouest-France: "All of a sudden, we felt strong vibrations. The train lifted off the tracks." He added: "Some windows shattered.
