Trump responds to backlash over support for united Ireland and 'loves' what he said Donald Trump, who is in Ireland this weekend, said that a unification between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland 'is going to happen eventually" US President Donald Trump has said he "loves" the reaction sparked by his comments supporting Irish unification. The president, who is visiting Ireland this weekend, spoke briefly to reporters as he walked to the first tee on his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare. Asked about what he thought of the reaction to his comments made yesterday, he said: "I love them." Further asked about the backlash to his intervention, he said: "I love my comments." The president was also asked about a timeline for Irish unity and about Scottish independence but did not comment on these matters. He added it was "great" to be in Doonbeg, saying: "I love Irish people." Trump said yesterday: "I’d love to see it unified. I think it would be a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened. It’s going to happen eventually." Sitting next to Taoiseach Micheál Martin, he added: "We’re talking about it and you got the right man over here to get it moving. But, yeah, I think it would be a fantastic thing. "Now the UK will have something to say about it, obviously. But I think it would be a great thing. I mean, how can it be bad?" During a subsequent engagement at the US ambassador’s residence in Ireland, Mr Trump did not back away from his earlier answer, stating Irish unification would be "a very cool thing".
