UK weather maps show 34 areas will be battered by heavy rain on Monday - see full list The Met Office says the unsettled Atlantic weather will return on Monday, delivering typical autumnal downpours and strong winds - especially in the north of England and in most of Scotland More than 30 areas are about to be pounded by heavy rain with flood alerts issued as any hope of one last heatwave is washed away. It appears the UK won't be getting a sixth and final period of scorching temperatures, but although millions will have to seek cover amid a very wet start to the new week, we could still see 25C warmth before next weekend. But the Met Office's weather maps are about to turn blue and the agency's forecast for Monday shows rain is set to hit almost all of Scotland as well as parts of northern England. It will be hard for anyone in the areas to evade the downpour as maps show every county being bombarded by wet conditions, with the heaviest rain expected in the far north of Scotland near Stornoway. But things will be challenging in England, too. Flashes of striking orange appear on Met Office weather maps around the Lake District, suggesting the area will see the heaviest downpour. Three flood alerts are now in place. There are warnings over the Tidal River Avon, on the Somerset coast at Porlock Weir and the tidal River Waveney, with high tides expected. However, the battering doesn't spell the end of the warmth. Most areas will see sunshine in the days ahead, before the unsettled Atlantic weather returns. Five sweltering periods between May and August left the majority of the country in drought, sparking wildfires, hosepipe bans and travel disruption and another heatwave hadn't been ruled out in September. Things will warm up, but the conditions aren't likely to satisfy the official structural requirements for a heatwave. The Met Office's forecast for Monday states: "Warm and humid in the south with cloudy skies, although some brighter spells are possible. A dry start in the north, before heavy rain moves into Northern Ireland and Scotland." While rain will hit in the north of the UK, the Met Office has also forecast warm temperatures, especially in the south. There could be highs of 25C in London and 22C in Manchester and Cardiff, the forecast shows. It will also likely reach 20C in parts of Scotland. BBC weather forecaster Ben Rich says conditions are about to get warmer but doubts the high temperatures will stick around. Explaining that it will feel warm and muggy over the next few days, he said: "While things will undoubtedly feel warm, it will remain below the criteria for a heatwave. "This would require three consecutive days of temperatures above a threshold which varies from 25C in Scotland and Northern Ireland to 28C in the London area." While the cool conditions have been a welcome reprieve for many, with some much-needed rain falling across the UK this week and more to follow next week, it would appear that there may be one final blast of summery weather to come.
