Hospital apologises as nurse cuts one-year-old baby's finger off with scissors An assistant nurse was using scissors to try and remove a gauze dressing from the one-year-old's hand at Loengnoktha Crown Prince Hospital in Thailand when the gruesome incident occurred A hospital has apologised after an assistant nurse accidentally snipped off a part of a toddler's finger with scissors. The Loengnoktha Crown Prince Hospital in Thailand published a statement on Facebook saying the incident occurred during a procedure to remove an intravenous tube. The male nurse cut off part of the one-year-old’s index finger while removing the gauze wrapping that held the tube in place, the Bangkok Post reported. The severed part was put into an ice box and transported with the toddler to Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital for reattachment, with the procedure requiring two operations. The tot’s horrified mother took to Facebook to share a timeline of the events, adding that her child was still in pain and receiving treatment at the hospital. The hospital said the boy was admitted on September 2 for a respiratory and gastrointestinal infection. He was kept in while he recovered and was supposed to be discharged September 11, the day of the incident. Mum Wiphaphon Namkhan said the assistant nurse had allegedly inserted the scissors between the boy's fingers and attempted to cut the gauze, but it would not cut through. After trying several times she said a large amount of blood suddenly spurted from her baby’s hand and a severed part of her son's index finger rolled out of the wrapping. The hospital said it immediately provided first aid and care by specialists in paediatrics, surgery and orthopaedic surgery following the shocking incident. It also sought help from plastic surgeons at Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital. The one-year-old had two operations to try and reattach the finger, with medics saying they have to wait and see if it will be successful. The assistant nurse was suspended pending an investigation into the cause of the injury. The hospital has said it will continue to provide ongoing support, including medical expenses, travel, compensation and all entitlements to the boy’s family. "Following the incident, the medical and nursing team worked together to provide assistance to the patient to the best of their abilities, and a comprehensive review of patient care procedures has been conducted to ensure the safety of future hospital patients," the hospital statement said . The boy’s mother said a police report had been filed.
