A man has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed with a three-pronged spear during a large disturbance involving up to 100 people overnight.
The 22-year-old man, who has not been identified, suffered the horrific injuries during the disturbance which emergency services attended at around 11.45pm on Monday. The fight, involving two family groups, soon got out of control as many people were armed with weapons, including compound bows, spears and metal objects.
Police are investigating the armed "disturbance" in the remote Northern Territory community of Wadeye, 250 kilometres south-west of Darwin, overnight. So far no arrrests have been made.
A Northern Territory Police spokesperson said: "Northern Territory Police are investigating a large disturbance involving approximately 100 people in Wadeye overnight.
"At around 11:45pm, police responded to reports of a disturbance involving two family groups. A number of people were allegedly armed with weapons, including compound bows, spears and metal objects.
"During the disturbance, a 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries after allegedly being struck in the back with a three-pronged spear. Police entered a residence and safely extracted the injured man before escorting him to the Wadeye Health Clinic for treatment.
"A vehicle located near the rear of a residential property was also set alight after allegedly being surrounded by members of one of the groups. Police have not yet identified the vehicle’s owner.
"Additional officers were recalled to duty to assist with the response and restore order. Investigations remain ongoing.
