Horns' Manning apologizes for 'insensitive' reaction to violent AI video

Quarterback Arch Manning of No. 1-ranked Texas apologized Tuesday on social media for laughing and making an "insensitive comment" about an AI-generated video that depicted Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian slapping ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe. The AI-generated video was made in reference to Sarkisian cutting off Rowe's question on the field after Texas rallied to defeat then-No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 in Austin on Saturday. In reality, following a question by Rowe, Sarkisian responded with "Texas fight. Hook Em!" and abruptly walked off, cutting the interview short. In the AI-generated video, Sarkisian is shown shouting "Hook 'Em!" before slapping Rowe, who is shown falling face-down to the turf. On Monday, Manning was asked if he'd watched any fan-edited clips from the Longhorns' comeback win on social media. "I've seen a few AI edits of stuff, but that's about it. I saw an AI edit of Sark's interview," Manning said, laughing. "Have y'all seen that one? That's a good one. Of him slapping Holly Rowe? It's hilarious." One day later, amid backlash for his reaction, Manning issued an apology on Instagram Story. "In my press conference yesterday, I made an insensitive comment about an AI video," Manning said in his post. "There is nothing funny about it. It's easy to say I didn't mean it, but I know my words and actions were hurtful to a lot of people. I do not take that lightly and am deeply sorry for that. "I specifically want to apologize to Holly Rowe for what she has personally had to deal with because of my comments. I have a ton of respect for her and appreciate her showing me grace in this moment. I need to do better and will be more thoughtful going forward." Rowe said on X that she and Manning have discussed his comment and that she accepted his apology. "Thank you Arch," Rowe posted. "I appreciate our conversation about this -- which will remain private. Apology accepted. We move forward with respect and kindness for one another." Manning, the son of Cooper Manning and nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, led scoring drives of 15, 13 and 12 plays in the fourth quarter as the Longhorns rallied from a 23-3 deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Buckeyes on Saturday. The sophomore quarterback completed 11 of his last 15 throws to finish 23-of-37 for 195 yards and also rushed eight times for 24 yards. Texas next plays UT San Antonio on Saturday.
