The bus was carrying 40 schoolchildren to Bärenstein primary school when one of its tyres burst near Bärenstein, in the Erzgebirgskreis district, on Tuesday morning, the German news agency dpa reports. The bus was travelling along a diversion route for the B95 federal road, which is currently closed for roadworks, when the incident happened, according to dpa. A Chemnitz police spokesperson said the 16 children taken to hospital are believed to have suffered acoustic trauma. None sustained serious injuries. The accident triggered a major emergency response, with paramedics, police and firefighters attending the scene. Fire crews from Sehmatal and the neighbouring areas of Kretscham-Rotensehma, Neudorf, Cranzahl and Sehma were deployed, according to reports. Emergency services reportedly remained at the scene until the early afternoon. A replacement bus was arranged for the remaining 24 children. Police said an expert would examine the bus as part of an investigation into what caused the tyre to burst. It comes after 16 people were injured when a school bus carrying high-school students from Germany crashed in the east of the Netherlands on August 24. Eight of those injured were seriously hurt, while the others suffered minor injuries, the police department of Gelderland province said at the time. The bus, which was carrying more than 50 people and was registered in Austria, crashed near the town of Wezep, about 62 miles east of Amsterdam, at around 3am BST after colliding with a delivery van. The van's driver was among those injured.
