Speaker design, amplification, source material and room acoustics all affect what you hear. It also helps to separate the connection from the way the speaker is powered. Traditional passive speakers need a separate amplifier, which sends the amplified signal through speaker wire. Powered, or active, speakers have amplification built in. A wireless speaker receives audio over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or another wireless connection, but that doesn't necessarily make it cable-free. Many home models still plug into an outlet, while portable speakers run on batteries. What wired speakers still do better One clear advantage of passive wired systems is modularity. Because the amplifier and speakers are separate, you can replace or upgrade one without rebuilding the whole setup. That can limit placement or leave you figuring out how to hide wires along walls, under rugs or behind furniture. Many codecs use lossy compression, but Qualcomm's aptX Lossless is designed to deliver CD-quality lossless audio with compatible hardware, a lossless source and suitable wireless conditions. Wi-Fi systems can support lossless and high-resolution streaming too, so the connection type alone doesn't determine how good a speaker will sound. Some portable models support Wi-Fi, as well. Wired speakers are the stronger fit for a permanent stereo or home theater system if you don't mind running cables. Passive models give you more freedom to replace the amplifier or speakers later, and the wired connection avoids Bluetooth latency. Wireless speakers make more sense when portability, easier placement or multi-room playback matters more than component-level upgrades. Bluetooth is best-suited for speakers you want to move around, while Wi-Fi works better for several speakers spread through a home. Sound quality alone shouldn't decide it. Start with where the speakers will live and whether you care more about upgradeability, portability or multi-room playback. Then compare the actual speakers that fit that setup to get the best audio quality for your situation.
