The plane, which was heading towards Buochs Airport, collided with a mountainside shortly after 4pm in the Fluhalp area. The light aircraft had taken off from Lugano, a lakeside city in southern Switzerland near the Italian border, and made a stopover in Sion, Valais, before coming down near Luekerbad on Tuesday afternoon, the Valais Cantonal Police said. Three rescue helicopters were deployed to the crash site, while police and fire crews from Luekerbad and Sion Airport also attended. Bystanders reported heavy smoke in the area before emergency responders arrived and confirmed that all three occupants had died. The identities of the three people have not yet been officially released. Now the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed it is 'providing support to the families of two British nationals who died in Switzerland". Adding: "Our thoughts remain with the families during this difficult time," MailOnline reports. In a statement, local police said: "Shortly after 4 p.m., for reasons yet to be determined, the aircraft collided with the northern slope of a mountain in the Fluhalp area of Leukerbad. Signs of smoke were subsequently reported in the region." An investigation into the cause of the incident has since been opened by the federal Swiss authorities, and a criminal investigation is being led by the Office of the Attorney General of the Confederation, in collaboration with the Valais cantonal police.
