Torrential downpours have lashed the country with the government now issuing a red alert for flooding. The man was in Olivella, 25 miles west of Barcelona, when local media report his car approached a stream and was "swallowed by the force of the water". The driver was caught off guard by the force of the torrent at the Begues stream near a bridge before his vehicle plunged in and was swept away, La Vanguardia reports. The tragic news comes as heavy rainfall hit Spain’s south-east with orange and red weather warnings covering parts of Catalonia and Valencia. Local fire crews said they were called to reports of a vehicle falling into water in Olivella at around 11pm yesterday. In an update at around 12:30am this morning the fire service said the lifeless body of a man had been located about 500 meters from where the vehicle was found in the water. Eleven crews participated in the rescue operation, with the assistance of drones and rescue divers. Local media has described the victim as a “middle-aged British man” who lived in the Las Colinas neighbourhood of Olivella in Catalonia.
