DC Belichick resigns as UNC probe finds 'isolated' disregard for conduct

North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has resigned as the university's independent investigation into the football program's culture and climate found "isolated" disregard for values and standards of conduct. "These actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure," the school said in a statement Thursday. "... All necessary corrective actions are now underway and will be overseen by Carolina Athletics and the Office of University Counsel. With these actions, the University considers the investigation to be resolved." Belichick, the son of head coach Bill Belichick, will officially leave the program on Oct. 27, following the conclusion of his medical leave. Steve Belichick, 39, served as defensive coordinator under his father at North Carolina last season, and he also spent time with his dad on the New England Patriots' staff. UNC announced in July that general manager Michael Lombardi had been placed on administrative leave while an investigation into his conduct was underway. Lombardi resigned on Sept. 3. In addition, UNC said that freshman wide receiver Keeyun Chapman has been suspended indefinitely after he was arrested Tuesday night during a traffic stop for carrying a concealed handgun. "Chapman's suspension, like the actions resulting from the investigation, reflect the University's commitment to accountability and the well-being of its student athletes," UNC said in a statement.
