Buckingham Palace, in a rare statement, strongly refuted Charles's claims. During his interview with Kuenssberg at his ancestral home, Althorp, the Earl paused and became emotional when asked about the childhood memories he shares with Diana. He said: "My memories of Diana tend to be from our happy childhood days, in our home before this, which was Park House in Sandringham, in Norfolk. Even though we had the rupture of my parents' divorce, it was such a happy home. Just those days there, carefree days… not an instance, but a period of life." Diana and Charles' parents, John, Eighth Earl Spencer, and The Honourable Frances Shand Kydd, rented Park House on the late Queen Elizabeth's private Sandringham estate. John had a close tie to the late Queen, having served as an equerry to her and her father, King George VI. They moved to Althorp in 1975, when John inherited the title of Earl from his father. Charles went on to add: "It really breaks me up when I look at old photographs of Diana as a child, and then think what happened to her, it's terribly sad." When asked how much he misses his sister, he told Laura: "Every day. That's the thing with sibling loss. You never get over it." It was at this moment that Charles' eyes started to fill with tears as Laura brought the interview to a halt. Earlier this week, Charles' book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which is currently being serialised ahead of its release on Tuesday, has made a string of claims against The House of Windsor. He also suggests that his nephews, Diana's sons, Princes William and Harry, will not be shocked by his book. He said: "I don't like to talk about what I've been speaking about to William and Harry but this will not be a surprise to them I will tell you that. These words will not be a surprise to them." Charles also addressed the two princes, walking behind Diana's coffin ahead of her funeral. William was just 15, and Harry was 12, just weeks before his 13th birthday. He claims to have argued with the then-Prince Charles, Diana's former husband, over the decision. He claimed: "I said, 'Well, of course not, sir, she wouldn't want it'. And then he said, 'Well, I walked behind Lord Mountbatten's coffin.' And I said, 'Yes, but you were 30, and he wasn't your mother'." Following the claims that His Majesty said people would "soon forget" the late Princess, Buckingham Palace said: "While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss." In retaliation, the Earl claimed to have been "gaslit" by His Majesty, adding that the statement was a "poor imitation of the 'recollections may vary,'" quote which Her Late Majesty famously used during the fallout from Harry and Meghan's infamous Oprah Winfrey interview.
