A vending machine stocked with chargers, toothbrushes and nail files has appeared at a Liverpool train station after it emerged that the city is home to the most forgetful university students in the country. The installation at Liverpool Lime Street also included headphones, slippers and notebooks - all items that current undergraduates admitted to leaving behind when packing for a new term. It follows a poll of 1,300 university students across Britain, which found that 83% have arrived at their halls or shared accommodation only to discover they had left something essential at home. Many have had to muddle through, living an average of 129 miles from home, while 43% have been forced to splash out more than they had budgeted for, spending an average of £40.56 replacing items they had accidentally left behind. Catherine Lyver for Railcard.co.uk, which was behind the pop up and research, said: "Moving to university can come with a seemingly endless packing list, so it's no surprise that many students experience that sinking feeling when they realise they've left an important item behind. "Our research suggests that forgetting something is almost a rite of passage when moving to university. "That's why we've stocked our 16-25 Railcard vending machine with some of the most forgotten items, helping Liverpool students avoid last-minute panic as they settle into the new term." The research revealed that 66% of British students would consider themselves forgetful, with 48% not realising they had left something behind until they began unpacking. Laptops (70%) and chargers (65%) topped the list of the most essential items to pack for the new term, ranking higher than underwear (63%). The OnePoll study also discovered that 57% of students believe there is simply too much to remember when it comes to moving to university. It further revealed that 53% would typically take the train to university, citing it as the quickest way to travel (24%) and the more affordable option (17%).
