The four-day survey, which ended on Sunday, showed 73% of Republicans approved of Trump's job performance, down from 82% a week prior. His overall approval was recorded at 35% during that earlier survey. Trump reclaimed the White House in January 2025 on pledges to control inflation and end foreign wars. In a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken hours after his swearing-in, his approval stood at 47%. Just 17% of participants in the new poll approved of his cost-of-living record — the chief concern Americans say will guide their vote in the November 3 midterms, where Republicans defend narrow congressional majorities. Dissatisfaction among Republicans has mounted since Trump began the war with Iran in February, driving gasoline and diesel prices upward. For the first time, Republicans disapproving of his cost-of-living management outnumber supporters, 51% to 44%. The Reuters/Ipsos survey was conducted online, drawing 1,277 responses from US adults nationwide. It carried a margin of error of 3 percentage points. Trump’s approval rating was even lower in another poll conducted by American Research Group from Sept. 16-20 among 1,100 American adults. That survey showed the president with a 29% overall approval rating. "This poll is an outlier, as others are not as bleak for the president, but overall it's pretty clear that Trump's numbers are worse now than they were eight years ago," Kyle Kondik with the University of Virginia's Center for Politics told Newsweek. "Dissatisfaction with the economy/inflation is probably the biggest reason why."
