Macron reveals details of 'very constructive' chat with Trump on ending Ukraine war Macron and Trump appear to have made some decent headway on matters regarding Ukraine and Russia, as the war in Ukraine rages on 1,670 days after Russia's 2022 invasion of its European neighbour French President Emmanuel Macron says his meeting in New York with US President Donald J. Trump was a productive one. The pair met up at Trump Tower in the Big Apple on Monday night, September 21 ahead of a broader summit at the United Nations this week, with world leaders descending on America's eastern coast for talks of world peace and problems. Macron told French journalists that he and Trump had spent the Monday meeting discussing the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and in around the Red Sea. "The other issue we talked about was the situation in the Red Sea . . . It's important for global prices. Then we had a long discussion about Ukraine and Russia," he said, before adding: "We had a very good discussion. It was very constructive." On Ukraine, Macron said he has pressed Trump on the issue of supplying defensive weapons systems to Ukraine. They discussed "the need to help our Ukrainian friends faster and more strongly in terms of [missile] interceptors, because that is . . . a defensive measure," the French leader said. Macron added that Trump was "very amenable and we were able to go into detail on these two conflicts, which are obviously important for peace in the world and for our security." More to come.
