The fire broke out on the southbound motorway between junctions 19 and 20, with drivers now facing delays of 45 minutes and 4 miles of queuing. Dramatic pictures from the scene show the vehicle engulfed in flames, with thick, dark smoke rising as firefighters tackle the blaze.
It is unclear whether anyone has been injured. Traffic monitoring website Inrix states: "M5 - SOMERSET - SOUTHBOUND - BRISTOL Long delays and two lanes closed due to recovery work and earlier vehicle fire on M5 Southbound from J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead) to J20 B3133 Ettlingen Way (Clevedon). Congestion to J18 M48. Lanes one and two (of four). Emergency crews are on scene."
