Lindsay, 36, was left paralysed following the killings after she leaped from a second-floor window. A judge declared a mistrial earlier this month after a jury did not reach a unanimous verdict over whether she was guilty of murdering her three children. A mistrial in the US is similar to a hung jury in the UK. Speaking to CBS, Patrick said he did not know how to manage postpartum psychosis. He added that he believed mental illness has an ability to be "tragically deceptive". Lindsay's legal team argued she had postpartum psychosis, where women can develop manic or depressive episodes as well as a mixture of both cases. It was this condition that resulted in Patrick deciding to forgive his ex-wife. "I saw headlines that said, you know, 'Killer Mom', and 'Baby Murderer', 'Monster'. And none of them were accurate," he said. "I believe that it was her mental illness that caused that. So I shared those words. And I think when it comes to forgiveness, I also felt that if I didn't get there, I would be eaten up inside forever." Patrick also admitted to having suicidal thoughts and said he "didn't think I would live to see my 35th birthday. He addressed baseless claims that he was to blame for the killings as the trial became subject to conspiracy theories. The 36-year-old has since moved to New York City in a bid for greater anonymity. He is also hoping to start a new family with his new wife Danis and hopes to tell his future offspring about their siblings. He added: "I think every parent can agree, you have different relationships with your kids, but they're all your kids. And I can't wait to tell them about their brothers and sister." Lindsay is due for her next hearing at Massachusetts' Plymouth Superior Court on September 29. Prosecutors have not revealed whether they intend to seek a mistrial.
