Jones greeted athlete with 'slap on the bottom', ex-butler tells court

David Allan, who worked as Alan Jones's butler for nearly two decades, has recalled seeing athletes visit the broadcaster's luxury apartment in Sydney. The 79-year-old told Mr Jones's trial the radio host would hug and "slap on the bottom" of one high-profile complainant. Mr Jones has pleaded not guilty to 21 charges of indecent assault and sexual touching against five male complainants. Alan Jones's butler of almost 20 years has told a criminal trial the radio host used to greet a high-profile complainant with a hug and a "slap on the bottom" during multiple visits to his luxury apartment. David Allan, 79, who worked as Mr Jones's personal butler for more than 18 years, is giving evidence in the broadcaster's indecent assault and sexual touching trial in the NSW Local Court. Mr Jones has pleaded not guilty to 21 charges, including to allegations he kissed a prominent athlete, Complainant M, twice without his consent. Mr Allan, who trained as a butler in the United Kingdom, said his former boss would have a "cavalcade" of famous people, including many high-profile sports stars, come through his Sydney apartment for lunches, dinners and parties. He told the court he recalled visits from Complainant M, and was asked by the prosecution how Mr Jones would greet the athlete. "With a hug ... a slap on the bottom ... 'hello champion'," Mr Allan said. Asked whether Mr Allan did in fact say the words "a slap on the bottom", the butler replied: "Probably the wrong thing to say today isn't it…" "They slap each other, it's what they all do," he said, referring to the way sportsmen greet each other. Butler recalls athletes' visits to luxury home Mr Allan has been asked to recall specific guests Mr Jones had in his apartment as early as 2003. The butler said he cannot recall many names, but accepted Mr Jones hosted "maybe half a dozen" young male athletes in their "early twenties". "I mean most people that are sporting-wise, they're around that age bracket, aren't they?" he said. Mr Allan, who spoke quietly with a British accent, was also asked to describe his work for Mr Jones at his luxury Circular Quay apartment, The Toaster. "I'd design his shirts, buy fabric for his suits," he told the court. "I'd do all the cleaning … polish the shoes and clean the loos." Asked if he ever requested any of Mr Jones's work colleagues to help with household chores at The Toaster, he said he may have asked for assistance at times. "I suppose … I could have said, 'can you put that away, unpack that case of wine'," he said. But he denied asking anyone else to help with the ironing. "[Mr Jones's] fabrics are too expensive," he said. "Fabrics were the finest of finest … nobody touched them but me." "Did you iron the underpants?" prosecution barrister Georgina Wright SC asked. "Absolutely," the butler replied. He told the court he started the role in 2001 making sandwiches, and after the 2GB host "realised I could boil an egg", there would be almost daily hosting duties. "Almost every day of the week … we'd have guests for lunch … and that extended into dinner time," he said. "We'd do Sunday roasts … Saturday breakfasts." He described Mr Jones's work schedule as "extraordinarily brutal".
