The Sound of Music: Austrian museum pays tribute to Von Trapp family and Hollywood musical

Does your heart want to sing every song it hears? Or maybe your heart beats like the wings of the birds that rise from the lake to the trees? If so, the answer lies in Austria, where the first-ever museum devoted to The Sound of Music has just opened in Salzburg. Alongside celebrating the 1965 Julie Andrews movie, the museum delves into the history of the Von Trapp family, whose story of fleeing Nazi-occupied Austria and becoming a famous musical group also inspired a Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway musical. Housed in the 17th-century Hellbrunn Palace, visitors can experience some of the movie's original sets, including the famous gazebo where Liesl and Rolf sang 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen'. The museum also features nearly 450 objects from the film, including props, costumes, posters and music recordings. The exhibition is open daily until 1 November, then re-opens again in March 2027.
