Keeping bread fresh is a common challenge for many people. But one item coming out at Aldi next week could offer a solution. The supermarket is bringing out a new kitchen worktop storage item on Thursday, October 1, that could be helpful for people who regularly buy bread.
While many households choose to store a loaf of bread in the refrigerator, food science shows this isn't the best way to keep it fresh. A dedicated bread bin has been proven to extend the shelf life and quality of baked goods.
Bread stales due to a chemical process known as starch retrogradation. When baked, the starches in flour absorb water. As the bread cools and ages, those starches recrystallise, releasing moisture and forcing the loaf to turn dry and hard.
Refrigeration actually accelerates this process. The cold environment of a standard fridge causes starch molecules to recrystallise roughly six times faster than they would at room temperature.
Meanwhile, leaving bread entirely exposed on a countertop invites drafts that dry it out. And trapping it in airtight plastic containers locks in excessive ambient moisture, creating a breeding ground for premature mould growth.
A bread bin often resolves these issues by creating a controlled microclimate. It maintains a stable, dark environment that shields loaves from direct sunlight and temperature changes. Bread bins also help balance ventilation by letting out just enough moisture to prevent condensation and mould, while retaining enough humidity to keep the bread soft.
Hovis says the best way to store bread is in a bread bin. It says: "Bread bins provide a cool, dry environment with just the right amount of air circulation to prevent excess moisture and mould growth. Stay on top of crumbs, though. We advise cleaning out your bread bin weekly so bread stays fresher for longer."
For shoppers looking to put these storage principles to work without spending a fortune, a budget-friendly option like the Aldi Crofton Industrial Kitchen Bread Bin could be a useful choice. The item will be going on sale next week for £7.99.
The metal container has small holes that allow air to flow through, helping control the moisture inside. Aldi says: "Keep your kitchen organised in style with this industrial-inspired bread bin.
"Its timeless design makes it both a practical and eye-catching worktop essential. Ideal for bread, cakes and pastries. Choose from black, cool grey or beige."
Aldi releases its highly popular Specialbuys twice a week, dropping new stock every Thursday and Sunday. Because these limited-edition items are sold on a strictly "while stocks last" basis, they often sell out rapidly.
