Alongside the teacher, two other people - including a child - sustained stab wounds, according to Slovak broadcaster TV JOJ. The teacher - a 61-year-old woman - was pronounced dead at the scene, a child was taken to hospital in critical condition, and another teacher - a 44-year-old woman - was taken to hospital in a condition yet to be confirmed. "We can confirm that we have sent two ground ambulances and two rescue helicopters to the scene. The intervention is ongoing," said Petra Klimešová, a spokesperson for the Emergency Medical Service Operations Centre. "Air rescuers transported a child in critical condition to the hospital in Martin. After initial treatment, a 44-year-old patient with a stab wound to the chest was airlifted to the hospital in Žilina. Unfortunately, the 61-year-old woman suffered injuries incompatible with life." Authorities said the attacker was a teenage pupil in the eighth grade, equivalent to Year 9 in the UK. Police earlier confirmed that they were investigating "a violent crime", adding: "The situation is now under control." Officers did not confirm whether the suspect had been arrested. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he was "deeply saddened" by the "tragic" incident in Staškov and that he was following it "with great concern". He said in a statement on social media: "Schools must be a safe place for our children, otherwise we will have no future." He offered his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery, adding that the relevant ministers were on their way to the scene. President Peter Pellegrini said in a video message on social media that was "shocked that this is yet another case in which a student attacked teachers and a classmate". "Aggression and an atmosphere of intolerance, spread primarily by social media and, unfortunately, by some politicians as well, are literally poisoning the public sphere and influencing the behaviour of our children in schools," he said.
