He qualified in medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1959 and then held early junior hospital posts in Slough, Ashton-under-Lyne (now Tameside), and Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport. He subsequently undertook a year’s GP training in Reading before working in general practice in London, Richmond, and north Manchester.He then moved to a psychiatric post at Billinge Hospital in Wigan. In May 1970 he joined Prestwich Hospital in Manchester, working initially on long stay and later more acute wards before becoming associate specialist in psychogeriatrics, a post he held until retirement.
