UK weather maps capture 551-mile band of rain stretching from Scotland to Devon
WXCharts forecast maps suggest a 551-mile band of rain could stretch from Scotland to Devon on Friday, October 9 — with snow also possible in parts of Scotland
These striking weather maps show large swathes of the UK is to take a soaking next week.
A band of low pressure will sweep across the country — as far south as Devon — through to parts of Scotland as temperatures drop. Downpours will be heaviest, forecasters say, on Friday October 9, especially in western and northern parts of the UK.
The unsettled picture will linger into next weekend too, meteorologists understand. The maps, issued by forecasters at WXCharts, show the band of low pressure will move eastwards on Friday and Saturday.
And in certain regions, weather maps have turned green and red, indicating rainfall rates of between 1.5mm and 4mm per hour. Scotland will bear the brunt of the downpours, according to the latest weather maps.
But the rain will also reach large parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Friday, it is thought. Temperatures will drop too, following a balmy spell recently. It will be cold enough for snow in Scotland — as highlighted in the purple hue on the maps.
As the Express reports, the mercury reached 26.3C in Cambridge on Wednesday. However, next week large sections of the country could see lows of 10C with freezing possible overnight across the Scottish Highlands.
The Met Office says "a spell of mostly dry and fresher conditions, some chilly nights [are] possible" next week, leading to the downpours on Friday. It also states temperatures will be closer to average for this time of year.
"So, further rain and strong winds at times, mainly focused across the northwest, while southern areas see more in the way of dry weather. Temperatures close to or rather above average on the whole," the long-range forecast reads.
