With Charles Spencer continuing his book tour with the American media, the Mirror’s Pod Save the King have exposed his ulterior motive when discussing his late sister, Princess Diana
One week on after Earl Spencer’s bombshell memoir hit shelves, it is staying in the headlines as Princess Diana ’s brother is continuing his book tour around America. Charles Spencer’s book - titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister - took aim at the King and the Royal Family, with several astounding claims about then Prince Charles’ comments and conduct after the tragic death of Diana in 1997.
Now, Earl Spencer has taken his book tour Stateside, as he has appeared on numerous American talk shows to reiterate his claims made in the book, and continue to hit back at the unprecedented statement made by the palace.
And while Spencer’s book has been flying off the shelves with countless royal watchers immersing themselves in his recollections, the Mirror ’s royal editor Russell Myers believes the Earl may have an ulterior motive for penning the book in the first place.
On this week’s episode of the Mirror’s Pod Save the King YouTube show, Russell said: “Is this book tour all part of a ploy for Earl Spencer to do a worldwide tour, sell the book, and then people in America or other far away lands are thinking ‘Wouldn’t it be great to go to Althorp?’ People are paying the entrance fee to go and see where Diana grew up, and suddenly the coffers are boosted from that.”
In the memoir, Earl Spencer recalls sweet memories of his childhood with Diana spent at their ancestral home of Althorp House, where the late Princess of Wales is now buried.
During his book tour in the UK, Charles Spencer appeared on Lorraine, where he insisted he did not set out to create a ‘hit piece’ against the King, but added that he had ‘no regrets’ over including the monarch’s comments.
Earl Spencer told Lorraine: “This book is a celebration of an extraordinary woman from a brother’s point of view. And as a brother, I have every right to write about my sister.
“But I would like to explain that I was not setting out to do a hit piece on the King at all. The comments [from Charles] that I’ve included in the book are totally in context.”
The TV host then quizzed Spencer on if he felt he was ‘going against the Royal Family’ by writing the book, to which the earl said: “I’m really not. This is about Diana. It’s impossible to give the full story of Diana’s life without putting in context of certain things that were said.
“This is not a threat at all because I’m not going to do it, but if I wanted to write a hit piece on the Royal Family, I could do that, but that’s not my job. My job is to celebrate Diana, and by doing that, some people might come off not as good as they would like to.”
