VIJAYAWADA: A 19-year-old woman Mahalakshmi, who had reportedly endured months of harassment from her boyfriend, died after he brutally attacked her at her home in New Rajarajeswari Pet, Vijayawada, on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Chinna Rao (22), later jumped from a neighbouring building and died, turning the incident into a double tragedy.
The young woman, who lost both her parents, was living with her grandmother. Chinna and the woman had reportedly been in a relationship for around six months.
However, their relationship turned strained after she began distancing herself from him. According to her relatives, Chinna had been harassing her for several months.
The relationship reportedly faced opposition from the man's family, who allegedly refused to accept the marriage citing the woman's poor financial condition. The growing differences and repeated arguments further complicated the situation.
The woman's family members said the couple had quarrelled recently, following which Chinna was reprimanded and sent away. However, on Saturday, when the young woman was alone at home, Chinna allegedly attacked her with a sharp knife, inflicting severe injuries on the head.
Her screams alerted family members and neighbours, who rushed to the house and found her lying in a pool of blood. She was immediately shifted to a hospital, where doctors fought to save her life. Despite nearly four hours of treatment, she succumbed to her injuries at around 1.30 pm.
In a parallel tragedy, Chinna allegedly jumped from the top of a neighbouring building and died. His body was shifted to the Vijayawada Government General Hospital for postmortem examination.
The incident sent shockwaves through New Rajarajeswari Pet, with the woman's grandmother and relatives breaking down in grief at the hospital.
Police registered a case and launched an investigation to establish the sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the fatal attack and the man's death. Further details are awaited.
