Police officers are continuing to quiz a man on suspicion of murder, after a GP was found dead while hosting a children's sleepover.
The woman, named locally as mum-of-three Dr Hannah Terry, 45, was said to have welcomed friends of her children in her home when she died. Police were called to the house by the ambulance service shortly after 2.20am on Sunday and arrested a man on suspicion of murder after she was pronounced dead.
The man, who is also aged in his 40s, was still being quizzed by detectives today after police were granted extra time to question him. It is believed that children sleeping over at the house were taken back to their parents’ homes by officers in the early hours of Sunday.
White-suited forensic officers were today continuing to search the detached house where Dr Terry lived in Fern Hill, Dersingham, Norfolk. The house is surrounded by the 20,000 acre Sandringham estate and is just over a mile from Sandringham House.
Neighbours said they were shocked to hear of her death. Several bouquets of flowers were left on a verge outside the house today with one carrying a message, saying: “Such a tragic loss. A lovely, kind, caring neighbour and friend, but above all a devoted mum. God bless you Hannah and your precious boys.”
Police could be heard today cutting back the property's garden with strimmers and other tools as they searched for clues. Potential evidence from the house was also seen being loaded up into the back of an unmarked police car.
Norfolk Police have not yet revealed the results of a post mortem by a Home Office pathologist which was due to be carried out yesterday to establish how she died. Dr Terry had worked part time as a GP for three days a week at the Grimston Medical Centre since last year, according to the surgery’s website.
The surgery remained closed today with only a dispensary service open for three hours for regular patients to collect urgent medication. A notice on the surgery’s website stated: “We are sorry to let patients know that Grimston Medical Centre, including the dispensary, is temporarily closed due to extremely difficult circumstances affecting our practice team.
“We apologise for the disruption and appreciate your patience and understanding at what is a very difficult time for our colleagues. If you have an appointment today, you will be contacted about alternative arrangements as soon as possible.”
A patient, paid tribute to her on Facebook on a post saying: “Fly high and sleep well dr terry.......you never deserved this to happen, heaven has gained an angel.........you was a lovely dr who listened to us and helped us.......thinking of you and your family and your children and friends and especially ALL staff & colleagues at Grimston medical centre xxxxx— feeling sad.”
Dr Terry was also a director of the Norfolk Sky Aesthetics , specialising in anti-wrinkle and fermal filler treatments. The GP had previously worked for nine years at the Heacham Group Practice in Norfolk until leaving last June “to allow her to spend more time with her young family”.
A statement on the practice’s website added: “We are all very sad to see her leave and are very grateful for all her hard work, support and advice over the last nine years. We wish her all the very best for the future.” One neighbour who asked not to be named said: “It is unbelievable what has happened. I am very upset about it. They are a lovely, lovely family.
“They had a huge field attached to their garden. They cut down some trees on it and were thinking of selling it as a building plot. They were active and always seemed busy. I would see her and the boys heading down to the village playing fields with their backpacks and tennis racquets."
A 95-year-old neighbour who asked not to be named said: “I never heard anything happening during the night and woke up on Sunday morning to see police cars everywhere."
Norfolk Police confirmed that the arrested man remained in custody at the police investigation centre in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. Police said a superintendents’ extension had been granted allowing him to be held for “an additional 12 hours for further investigation and questioning” on top of the 24 hours which police are normally allowed to keep an arrested person in custody.
This was followed by a further extension for an additional 32 hours granted by Great Yarmouth magistrates yesterday. The deadline ends late tonight, but officers are able to apply for further extensions and can hold a suspect in serious cases such as murder for up to 96 hours without charging them.
Det Insp Alix Wright, from the Norfolk & Suffolk Major Investigation Team, said: “We are in the very early stages of this investigation working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. I’d ask anyone who believes they may have information that could help our investigation to please share this with us.”
One neighbour said of Dr Terry: “She was just a lovely human being with three gorgeous young children. I’m just out of words, we all are.”
An earlier Norfolk Police statement said: “Officers were called to a house in Fern Hill, Dersingham, shortly after 2.20am on Sunday 4 October by the ambulance service. Sadly, a woman aged in her 40s was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after police arrived.
“A man aged in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He remains in custody. Detectives from the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation.”
Dr Terry’s parents Stephen and Kathleen Terry also refused to comment at their home in Dersingham.
