Lawyers representing Christa Pike have shared her first words upon waking up after her botched execution.
They appeared in court today following her botched execution last week. The killer survived two lethal injections before being rushed to hospital. She remains in hospital in Nashville.
Speaking to the press outside a court house in Tennessee, her lawyer Randy Spivey told reporters she asked two questions as soon as she woke up.
She said: “Where am I and who are you?”
Mr Spivey added that Pike was “angry and confused” and “very aware that the state tried to execute her”.
He described “extraordinary” swelling to her hands, which he said looked like “if you tried to blow up a surgical glove".
He said Pike had woken up with a blood clot and pneumonia, he said she couldn't swallow or move her arms - both of which were horribly swollen. "I don't know what function she will regain," he added.
Christa Pike's legal team said that the botched execution was “foreseeable and foreseen” due to her medical condition.
Randy Spivey said: “What happened to Christa is exactly what the state was warned would happen, and there are so many questions that need to be answered, not by Christa — but by the state of Tennessee."
He added: "Christa was at peace she helped execution team find what that they thought was veinous access."
Mr Spivey said Pike has not been able to swallow or eat since she has regained consciousness, adding "we do know that there is a long road ahead."
