The mother of a previously missing 14-year-old girl — who police allege was raped and impregnated by her father and whose newborn baby was found dead at the side of a road — has been arrested in Northern California.
Ofelia Garcia Ortega is the mother of the teenage girl who was allegedly raped by 38-year-old Sergio Galvez Perez. She was taken into custody in Salinas around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.
Perez is both the 14-year-old girl's father and allegedly the father of the teenager's baby. The newborn was found dead on the side of the road in Monterey County on August 1.
The teenage girl gave birth to "Baby Angelita" and allegedly left the child on the ground near an agricultural field in Monterey County on August 1, police believe. A forensic exam found signs of traumatic injury on the baby.
After the baby was discovered, the teenager disappeared, prompting an Amber Alert in California.
The girl and her father, Perez, were taken into custody in Mexico last weekend.
Before Perez and his daughter were found, Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto told the press that police were hunting for the teenager in connection with the baby's death, but also because they suspected she had been abused herself.
Nieto said that "at the center of this is two children — Baby Angelita who lost her life and a 14-year-old child who’s now the subject of serious allegations involving the death of the baby, who is also a victim because of the sexual abuse by her own father,”
The mother, Ortega, was arrested on Tuesday in relation to the circumstances surrounding the baby's death.
She has been charged with two felony country of displaying or possessing a forged ID card, one misdemeanor count of permitting a child to suffer or be endangered, and one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Prosecutors claim that Ortega forced her daughter to work in agricultural fields when she reached the age of 13 and used fake identification documents to allow the girl to drive before she was legally permitted.
They also claim that Ortega kept the girl from attending school.
Ortega was booked into the Monterey County Jail, and her bail was set at $150,000.
Perez, the girl's father, has been charged with incest, child abuse, and child sex crimes, as well as for unlawfully marrying his daughter.
The case is still being investigated by the FBI and Monterey County law enforcement.
