A DoorDash delivery driver in Maryland has become a hero after he delivered food to the customer despite being involved in a serious car accident. The driver's brakes failed and his car got completely damaged, but he still contacted his customer and offered to let him collect the order from the accident scene. The customer recorded the unusual pickup, and the video soon went viral online. An fundraiser was also launched to help the driver replace his car and cover medical expenses. The driver, identified as William Koroma, was making his last delivery of the night on Church Road in Bowie, Maryland, when the accident occurred, Fox News reported last month. According to Koroma, his vehicle suffered brake failure, resulting in a major crash. He survived the accident and later said that no one else was seriously injured. Despite what had happened, Koroma contacted his customer, Glenn Ndibnu, to explain why he could not complete the delivery. Instead of simply cancelling the order, he told Ndibnu that he could come to the crash site and collect his food if he wanted. Ndibnu decided to go to the location and began recording as he approached the scene. Several emergency vehicles were present, with their lights flashing. Koroma's badly damaged car was visible nearby, while the customer's food order had been placed on the pavement. The video captured Ndibnu's surprise at finding himself collecting a food delivery from the scene of a serious accident. The unusual food pickup In the video, Ndibnu explained how he had ended up at the location after receiving a message from his delivery driver. "I DoorDashed some food, and my DoorDasher told me he got in a car accident, and he was like, ‘I can come meet him and get the food from him,'" he said as quoted by Fox News. As he approached the crash site, Ndibnu spotted what appeared to be his order on the pavement. However, he also appeared uncomfortable about collecting his food while the driver was dealing with the aftermath of the accident. He eventually walked over to collect the order. Before leaving, he apologised to Koroma and checked whether he was alright. The footage was subsequently shared on social media and attracted widespread attention. The attention also brought Koroma's circumstances into focus. The accident had left the driver facing several financial difficulties. William's recovery and transportation fund Following the crash, Koroma started a GoFundMe campaign titled "William's Recovery and Transportation Fund" to raise money for another vehicle and other essential expenses. In his appeal, he explained that the accident happened while he was working on his final DoorDash delivery of the night. "My vehicle experienced brake failure, and I was involved in a major accident. My car was totaled, and I am deeply grateful that I survived and that no one else was seriously injured," Koroma wrote. Koroma said the loss of his vehicle had affected his ability to travel and work. He also revealed that he had lost his job after the accident. "Since the accident, I have been facing several challenges at once. Losing my vehicle has left me without reliable transportation, and I have also lost my job," he said. According to his fundraising appeal, the situation has made it difficult for him to manage everyday expenses, including food and other basic necessities. Koroma also said he was dealing with medical costs resulting from the accident. Fundraiser crosses $16,000 As the video gained attention, Ndibnu shared a link to Koroma's fundraiser through his Instagram posts, allowing people who had watched the footage to contribute. The latest GoFundMe page shows that the campaign has collected $16,595 from 850 donations, against an updated target of $18,000. Koroma explained that the donations would primarily help him purchase another vehicle, allowing him to regain reliable transportation. Part of the money would also go towards medical bills and urgent living expenses. He said having a vehicle again would be an important step towards returning to work and improving his financial situation. In his appeal, Koroma thanked those supporting him and encouraged people who could not donate to share the fundraiser with others.
