Five people have been injured including a train driver following a collision involving two locomotives near Lviv in western Ukraine, with emergency services at the scene
Passengers have scrambled out of carriages after two trains collided in Ukraine leaving five people injured.
The collision involved a diesel train travelling on the Lviv–Sokal route and an electric locomotive in the west of the country this evening.
It is understood that the diesel train was departing Pidzamche station, Lviv, when the crash happened with five people hurt, including the driver of the diesel train, who has suffered a leg injury.
Four passengers are also receiving medical assistance following the collision, while the drivers of the electric locomotive were not injured, according to Ukraine's national railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia.
Emergency services are at the scene and an investigation has been launched by the train operator.
Sadovy said on Telegram that rescuers are working to free the driver of the diesel train who has been trapped inside.
He stated: "According to Ukrzaliznytsia, during the departure of a diesel train on the Lviv - Sokal route, a collision occurred with an electric locomotive.
"It is known that the driver of the diesel train sustained a leg injury. Rescuers are currently working to free him from the cabin, where he was trapped.
"Four passengers are also receiving medical assistance. The drivers of the electric locomotive were not injured. Rescuers, medics, and railway workers are working at the scene. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated."
